Coinbase Joins Law Enforcement to Combat Scam Networks in West Africa
Coinbase, from October 6 to 9, conducted a joint operation in London with the Tech Against Scams Alliance, the UK National Crime Agency, the U.S. Department of Justice Fraud Center Task Force, and international law enforcement agencies to combat criminal scam networks operating in West Africa. Coinbase stated that as efforts to crack down on scam hubs in Southeast Asia intensify, criminal networks are expanding into regions such as West Africa. The operation targeted scam tactics including fake cryptocurrency investments, impersonating law enforcement officials, and conducting fake "arrests" via video calls to pressure victims into transferring money. Coinbase's Global Intelligence team was responsible for tracking illegal fund flows during the operation, assisting in freezing assets related to the scam networks, and sharing intelligence in real-time with law enforcement agencies.
