Electrum Releases Version 4.8.3 to Fix Bitcoin Wallet Flaw
Electrum disclosed a wallet flaw on October 24 that could convert a Bitcoin fee adjustment into an unintended payment. Version 4.8.3 addresses this issue, with downloads available from Electrum's official site. Users must still verify transaction destinations and amounts. The flaw involved malicious servers substituting an unconfirmed wallet-history entry, allowing a user to inadvertently authorize payment to an attacker when approving a fee increase. Two users were reported affected, with one losing money, but no total loss figure was established. This incident differs from private key theft, as the wallet owner could make the correct initial payment yet still face a dangerous second signing request. Electrum's lightweight client retrieves transaction information from servers, necessitating careful handling of remote data. The update does not reverse any Bitcoin transfers already confirmed to the wrong recipient, and unexplained transaction-history entries should not be assumed as proof of legitimate payments. Users are advised to check recipients and amounts for each new transaction approval, as the patched wallet reduces risk but does not eliminate the need for thorough transaction review.
