Volantis, a Photonic Interconnect Chip Company, Completes $88 Million Series A Financing
Volantis, a photonic interconnect chip company, announced the completion of $88 million in Series A financing. The company is dedicated to solving AI memory bottlenecks through optical solutions, enhancing high-speed memory configurations for chips, with memory bandwidth and capacity on a single chip increasing by several orders of magnitude to support high-speed inference for models with over 100 trillion parameters, achieving user speeds of up to 10,000 tokens per second. The initial application of this solution will be to accelerate agents, reducing programming tasks from hours to minutes or seconds. Volantis stated that the optical solution can enhance memory systems by several orders of magnitude per generation, rather than the typical doubling every year. Its team has been involved in the first CoWoS product, early HBM, the first silicon photonic CPO system, the first batch of mass-produced tunable VCSELs, and the first processors using optical direct communication. Currently, it has achieved transmission distances exceeding ten times that of equivalent micro-wires within chip packaging, and the next generation of products has been taped out, aiming to set a record for bandwidth density at relevant distances.
