KOSPI Index Expected Price-to-Earnings Ratio Drops to 4.2 Times
The expected price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of South Korea's KOSPI index has fallen to 4.2 times for the next 12 months, marking the first time since records began in 2006 that a trillion-dollar market has a P/E ratio below 5 times. Despite South Korea's exports approaching $1 trillion and strong demand for chips from SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, the cooling of the AI boom and the sell-off of tech stocks have put pressure on investor sentiment, making them reluctant to pay higher valuations for corporate earnings. Bloomberg comments that the extreme valuation discount in the South Korean stock market may present potential rebound opportunities, but there remains uncertainty about when valuation recovery will occur and whether the market will decline further.
