Bitcoin Core Changes Vulnerability Handling Policy
Bitcoin Core has changed its security vulnerability handling policy to ensure that bugs easily discoverable with the help of large language models are fixed and disclosed more quickly. Under the new policy, vulnerabilities that can be discovered with minimal effort will be promptly fixed for all supported major releases, and a security advisory will be published simultaneously with the release of the update. Antoine Poinsot, a Bitcoin Core developer, stated that long periods of confidentiality previously gave users the opportunity to upgrade but hindered the transfer of fixes to older versions of the software. Other vulnerabilities will be disclosed based on the severity of the risk; low-risk flaws will be announced two weeks after the release of the main version containing the fix, while medium and high-severity bugs will be disclosed two weeks after the end of support for the last vulnerable version. Critical bugs that could threaten the fundamental security of Bitcoin are excluded from this framework and will likely require a special process. This change indicates that the increased use of artificial intelligence in searching for vulnerabilities has prompted Bitcoin software developers to reconsider the timing of flaw disclosures.
