ECB Launches Pontes Pilot for Tokenized Asset Settlement

- Participants, asset eligibility, and access standards will matter more than the launch headline. Wider institutional relevance depends on which banks, market operators, and tokenized products the ECB ultimately allows into the framework.

The European Central Bank said it is launching Pontes, a system designed to let banks settle blockchain-based financial transactions in central bank money by connecting market DLT platforms with TARGET Services.
Pontes is not a public digital euro rollout and is not positioned as a cryptocurrency. According to the ECB’s description, the system is aimed at wholesale transactions, allowing banks and market infrastructure participants to settle DLT-based trades using central bank money rather than private settlement assets.
The ECB said Pontes connects blockchain-based market platforms with TARGET Services, the Eurosystem’s existing settlement backbone. The goal is to support transactions involving digital shares, bonds, and other tokenized financial instruments while keeping settlement inside established euro-area central bank infrastructure.
The project builds on earlier Eurosystem work on wholesale DLT settlement. In tests conducted between May and November 2024, the Eurosystem said it processed more than 200 transactions worth a total of €1.59 billion with 64 participants across more than 40 trials and experiments. Those exercises focused on whether wholesale transactions on DLT platforms could be settled with central bank money.
The broader digital euro program remains on a separate path. Reuters previously reported that the ECB selected 36 payment service providers for a retail digital euro pilot due to begin in the second half of 2027 and run for 12 months. The ECB has said it aims to be ready for a possible first issuance in 2029, assuming the required legislation is adopted.
Why It Matters
Pontes matters because it shifts the ECB’s digital asset work from research toward operational market infrastructure. If the model proves workable, it could give Europe’s tokenized capital markets a way to settle trades in central bank money without replacing the existing TARGET framework.
It also clarifies an important distinction in Europe’s digital money strategy. The ECB is pursuing one track for wholesale tokenized asset settlement and another for a consumer digital euro. That split matters for banks, market operators, and policymakers assessing how quickly tokenization may become part of regulated financial markets.
