Vance: Iran Must Substantially Reduce Uranium Enrichment Capacity, U.S. Won't Accept Verbal Promises
U.S. Vice President Vance stated that if Iran wishes to end the ongoing seven-month U.S.-Iran conflict, it must first substantially reduce its uranium enrichment capacity to prove it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. The U.S. will not exchange actual actions for Iran's verbal commitments. In an interview, Vance pointed out that if Iran does not want nuclear weapons, there is no need for 60% enriched uranium. He emphasized that the U.S. is still willing to resolve the issue through diplomatic means, but both sides must adhere to the principle of action for action. The core goal of the U.S. is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to stop other Middle Eastern countries from seeking nuclear capabilities. The main divergence in U.S.-Iran negotiations lies in the order of ceasefire and nuclear issues. Iran demands that the U.S. first implement a ceasefire, lift the port blockade, release frozen assets, and adjust oil export sanctions, before discussing nuclear issues; while the U.S. requires Iran to first take actual nuclear limitation measures and prevent the reconstruction of enrichment facilities damaged by war. Vance mentioned that the U.S. and Iran have recently exchanged proposals through mediators such as Qatar, but preliminary arrangements for restoring passage through the Strait of Hormuz have not been maintained. Vance warned that if a deal that meets U.S. requirements cannot be reached, the U.S. may expand military actions after the midterm elections in November.
