Sui Testnet v1.80.1 Released with Protocol 137 Updates

By: www.newsbtc.com|09/24/2026 07:30:00

Mysten Labs has released Sui testnet v1.80.1, featuring updates for protocol version 137. This release includes enhancements to protocol logic, GraphQL, JSON-RPC, and archival services. It is important to note that this is a testnet release and not a live Sui mainnet upgrade.

The update introduces several developer-facing changes, including improved cryptographic verification and package visibility. Ristretto255 range-proof verification is now cheaper and supports larger batches, while the GraphQL subscription root has been integrated into the production schema for operators who enable it. Additionally, archival infrastructure has expanded package-query support via the Bigtable-backed gRPC service.

These changes primarily impact developers building wallets, indexers, trading systems, and applications that rely on network data. The update also modifies execution and gas-accounting behavior under protocol version 137.

As a testnet build, v1.80.1 should not be considered a completed Sui mainnet upgrade, and any performance observed in this environment should not be assumed to reflect live mainnet behavior. Testnet releases allow developers to identify compatibility issues before a version is deployed to the production network.

The future of these protocol 137 changes will depend on their transition to mainnet and how well the ecosystem adapts. Developers will focus on compatibility alongside new features, as changes to GraphQL, JSON-RPC, and execution behavior can impact tooling, making the testnet crucial for ensuring smooth production operations.
