Saudi Arabia Plans to Increase Land Oil Transport Capacity to 10 Million Barrels Per Day
Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman stated that Saudi Arabia plans to increase its land oil transport capacity, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, to 10 million barrels per day within the next two to three years, in order to reduce reliance on the shipping routes in the Persian Gulf. Currently, the designed transport capacity of Saudi Arabia's east-west oil pipeline is 7 million barrels per day, with the actual daily transport volume having risen to 5.8 million barrels, of which approximately 4.5 million barrels are for export. Saudi Arabia is upgrading the pumping stations along the route to further enhance transport capacity. Additionally, Saudi Arabia plans to temporarily modify existing natural gas pipelines for crude oil transport, which could achieve a transport capacity of about 1.2 million barrels per day after adjustments to the relevant pipelines. If investments in pumping stations and compressors are increased, the potential capacity could rise to 3 million barrels. This strategy aims to address the risks of disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and security threats along the Red Sea route, establishing a more resilient crude oil export system.
