Meta, TikTok, X Initiate Legal Action Against UK Ofcom
Meta, TikTok, and X have begun legal action against the UK Ofcom. These companies argue that the scope of the content management materials requested by Ofcom is excessively broad, leading to an unprecedented regulatory burden. According to Reuters on the 5th (local time), this lawsuit is one of the initial legal disputes related to the Online Safety Act enacted in 2023. The Online Safety Act applies stricter standards to TikTok, X, and Meta's Facebook and Instagram to protect children from harmful content. Ofcom can impose fines of up to 10% of a company's global revenue for serious violations. Ofcom sent information submission notices to tech companies last February, and the requested materials include the number of deleted posts, the number of posts with exposure restrictions, and the number of users exposed to harmful content. X described Ofcom's demands as 'the most burdensome information request,' while Meta claimed that Ofcom requested extensive information without a clear regulatory purpose. TikTok stated that Ofcom bypassed alternative monitoring systems. Ofcom countered that the information is necessary to assess whether the new online safety regulations are actually functioning. This hearing is expected to conclude on the 7th.
