Hut8 Bitcoin Mining Founder Marc van der Chijs: AI May Cause Systemic Shock, Reconfigure Back to BTC
Coin Circle (120btc.CoM): Marc van der Chijs, co-founder of the well-known Bitcoin mining company Hut8, recently made alarming statements. In an interview with industry media CoinDesk, he bluntly stated that the current evolution of smart technology "has actually gone out of control." This loss of control is not due to crypto assets, but rather the fierce competition between states and corporations regarding artificial intelligence (AI). He pointed out that the speed of technological iteration has significantly surpassed the boundaries of human intervention, exposing the financial system and critical infrastructure to unprecedented risk exposures. As a pioneer in the industry who had heavily invested Bitcoin funds into the AI sector, van der Chijs admitted that his attitude has dramatically shifted to pessimism over the past week.
Code Vulnerabilities Meet Dimensionality Reduction Attacks
Regarding the potential crisis in the traditional financial system, van der Chijs painted an extreme scenario: AI directly infiltrating and attacking the legacy software of banks. Many large financial institutions worldwide still operate on decades-old underlying architectures, which harbor numerous unpatched code vulnerabilities within their intricate systems. AI not only possesses an extremely keen ability to scan for vulnerabilities but can also execute penetrations at speeds unattainable by human defense mechanisms. Once a core node in the internet collapses, it can easily trigger widespread systemic chain failures.
In contrast, he believes that Bitcoin's decentralized network demonstrates stronger resilience against risks. However, centralized commercial institutions and exchanges that rely on the crypto ecosystem have not been spared, as their infrastructure essentially still depends on traditional IT components, merely cloaked in the guise of crypto assets. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has previously expressed similar views, urging industry leaders to slow down the pace of cutting-edge AI research and development to prevent models from causing uncontrollable large-scale infrastructure failures during self-recursive upgrades.
Restructuring of Employment Landscape and Defensive Withdrawal of Capital Flows
The pessimistic sentiment at the macro level is built on disruptive predictions for the labor market. Van der Chijs presented a striking statistic: in the future, AI and robots may take over 90% to 95% of the job share in the existing labor market. Although this would significantly reduce the marginal costs of goods and services, the collapse of the current employment structure would severely impact the tax base of governments worldwide. To address this dilemma, he proposed the idea of taxing machines or AI computing power, but also acknowledged that if relevant large models operate independently on local terminals, regulatory scrutiny and taxation pathways would face significant obstacles.
Dramatically, van der Chijs and his company Hut8 are precisely the absolute beneficiaries of this wave of technological dividends. The company has successfully locked in a super computing contract valued at $9.8 billion by transforming its core business from crypto mining to AI data centers, which once drove its stock price to soar 33% in a single day, setting a new historical high. Earlier, he had sold a large amount of Bitcoin to heavily invest in the AI industry chain, but his funding strategy has recently undergone a significant reversal. He revealed that he is reinvesting the substantial capital gained from the AI sector back into the crypto market through compliant channels such as ETFs. He further analyzed that the siphoning effect of global capital towards the AI field is a significant resistance that has suppressed Bitcoin from breaking through the valuation range of $200,000 to $250,000. Even with the cross-border capital maneuvering completed, his strategic positioning on core assets remains unchanged, clearly stating that among all holdable assets, Bitcoin is still the ultimate choice for foundational allocation.
