Generation Z Starts Investing at an Average Age of 19, Favoring Cryptocurrency Investments = Grayscale
Zach Pandl, the research director at U.S. cryptocurrency investment firm Grayscale, announced on September 28 that Generation Z begins investing early, resulting in a longer investment period compared to previous generations.
According to him, younger American investors tend to start investing at an earlier age. A 2024 survey by Charles Schwab revealed that the average age at which individuals began investing is 19 for Generation Z, 25 for Millennials, 32 for Generation X, and 35 for Baby Boomers. Assuming a retirement age of 65, Generation Z's investment period would be 46 years, which is 1.5 times longer than the 30 years for the Boomer generation.
Pandl explained that a longer investment period allows for more time to recover from price fluctuations and leaves more future income available for investment. Cryptocurrencies, which have significant price volatility and asymmetric growth potential, are well-suited for such long-term frameworks.
Investors who start investing early may be able to increase the proportion of cryptocurrencies in their portfolios while keeping lifetime risks lower compared to later investors.
A September survey by U.S. Bank also found that 48% of Generation Z respondents considered new investment avenues like cryptocurrencies more attractive than traditional investments. However, 30% reported a decline in trust towards cryptocurrencies over the past year.
In Japan, participation in investing among younger individuals is also on the rise. A survey by the Financial Services Agency indicated that over 30% of the newly opened NISA accounts in the first half of 2025 were held by individuals in their teens and twenties.
Cryptocurrencies are classified as financial products under the revised Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, with a transition to separate taxation planned. If more young investors engage in long-term investments, the demand base for the cryptocurrency market may strengthen.
