FSB Warns of Risks of Stablecoins for Banks
Stablecoins, which are supposed to maintain their value, can cause problems for both the crypto market and traditional banks during times of panic. The Financial Stability Board (FSB) warns that countries are insufficiently prepared for a crisis surrounding these digital dollars. The regulations for stablecoins vary by country, and cooperation is still in development. In times of panic, issuers may sell their investments and withdraw money from banks to repay customers, which can cause turmoil in traditional financial markets. By mid-2026, stablecoins were collectively worth about $300 billion, with 99 percent pegged to the US dollar. FSB Chair Andrew Bailey writes to the G20 that international oversight and emergency agreements have yet to be developed. This leads to different rules in each country and may encourage companies to relocate to countries with less stringent regulations. The FSB advocates for better monitoring of where stablecoins are used and where reserves are held. The FSB also calls attention to the risks of artificial intelligence in the financial sector, particularly regarding cybersecurity, ahead of the G20 meeting on October 15.
