Debate on the Safety of Bitcoin ETF Custody
A debate has erupted among experts in the digital asset industry regarding the safe custody of Bitcoin (BTC) spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Bitcoin security expert Jameson Lopp and analyst Willy Woo exchanged views on X (formerly Twitter). Lopp argued that entrusting assets to professional custodians is not safer than personal custody, pointing out that custodians are also exposed to risks. In contrast, Woo emphasized, citing a report from River, that 1.57 million Bitcoins have been lost in personal custody, while losses on exchanges totaled 1.51 million, and there have been zero losses reported by ETF custodians. He claimed that regulated professional custodians can manage Bitcoin more securely, adding that Coinbase Custody has not lost any Bitcoin for over eight years. Lopp countered that the short operational period of ETFs means there have been no large-scale incidents and raised concerns about risk concentration. The debate expanded to Coinbase's custody record, with Lopp raising suspicions by mentioning past instances of asset loss by Coinbase. This debate highlights the differing opinions on whether individuals should bear the risks of Bitcoin custody or entrust it to professional institutions.
